Johannes Steiner(Hawk) is the son of an immigrant factory worker from one of the southern providences of the Empire. Upon the arrival in Loretan, Hawk's father got a job as an assistant to one of the engineering houses in Lore City, fell in love with a girl, got married and had a child whom he could afford to send for a proper education. After his training in the school of crafts, Johannes decided that instead of wasting his talents by working as an apprentice at a gun shop for another decade before he gets a chance to earn the shop he would strike out into the wilds of the Dragon Isles and seek his fortunes there.

Hawk was a nickname that Johannes acquired during his schooling, giving his natural talent for firearms.
