Vallgard is a duchy in the realm of Obrith. It began as the neutral Ward of the Silverwood, a land not ruled either by the King of the Sword or the Undying Queen, following the Great War. After the events of the Mist Cataclysm, the region was divided by the Ghostwall; the remainder on the southern side became the March of the Ghostlands. During the neutral period, the Warden of the Silverwood served the king as peer to the other High Lords of the marches, his charge to ensure the land's neutrality and defend the frontier of the kingdom. When the Ghostwall was raised, the Warden became the High Lord of the Ghostlands. Later, he was created the Duke of Vallgard.
Vallgard is largely defined by its history, particularly since the Great War. It has never been heavily populated, but has always been a frontier, currently serving as Obrith's northern border against the Nornlands and the Misted Vale, both of which harbor innumerable dire threats. As such, the duchy is known for its highly independent population, long used to defending themselves and their lands with little assistance from the king's armies.
Vallgard is host to the White Tower, although that structure and its immediate lands are not part of the duchy.
The current ruler of Vallgard is His Lordship, Jarl Ulric Wagnar, Ulric Magnar in the local tongue.
Geography
Vallgard encompasses the Vale of Silver south of the Ghostwall. It is officially bordered on the west by the river Sorodine, although numerous outposts and settlements exist on the opposite bank. In the east, it meets the duchy of Uthbrennol and the borders of the Undying Kingdom at the Thundercaps.
The Vale of Silver
The Vale of Silver, often named interchangeably with the Silverwood, is a fertile valley between the White Crest and Thundercap mountain ranges, bordered in the north by Silverwing Pass (currently inaccessible due to the Ghostwall).
The Vale is similar to the Misted Vale as it existed before the Mist Cataclysm. It is dominated by alpine forests, distinctly different from those of the Morrowood. The terrain is much more uneven than that southern land, due to the natural relief of the valley and the innumerable ravines carved by the region's many waterways.
Like the Misted Vale, the Silverwood is known for its mists, nowhere more so than on the shores of the Annensee (or ''Maiden's Lake''), a large lake near the center of the vale.
Population Centers
The largest concentration of people in Vallgard is near the Annensee, particularly the town of Forelstadt
