Mission Briefing
The Job
Morek the Twice-Branded was a famous gladiator in Tyr's arenas before the reforms. Now freed, he works as a trainer and occasional bodyguard. He approaches the guild with an unusual personal request.
When Morek was a slave, his owner possessed a gladiator's memory-stone—a small amber sphere containing the recorded experiences of a legendary fighter named Rakkan the Unbroken. Morek trained by communing with this stone for years. When slavery was abolished, his former owner fled to Kalidnay, taking the stone.
Morek wants the memory-stone back. It's the closest thing he has to a mentor.
Target Item
- Item: Gladiator's memory-stone (Rakkan the Unbroken)
- Description: Amber sphere, approximately fist-sized, warm to the touch, contains a golden shimmer when light passes through
- Properties: Psionic recording device containing a gladiator's combat memories; valuable to collectors and combatants
- Current Location: Believed to be in the private collection of Torval Heshen, Morek's former owner, now a minor merchant in Kalidnay
Objectives
- Primary: Recover the memory-stone
- Secondary: Do so without drawing official attention (Morek has no legal claim)
- Optional: Make Torval Heshen's life difficult (Morek's grudge, not required)
Client Terms
- The stone is the priority—everything else is optional
- Morek cannot pay for violence, but won't mourn if Torval has a bad day
- Guild must not be traceable—Morek still works in Tyr and can't afford enemies
- Payment in ceramic is limited; Morek offers his network instead
Known Complications
- Torval Heshen is a legal resident of Kalidnay with legal property rights
- The memory-stone may be displayed, stored, or already sold
- This is technically theft, even if morally justified
- Kalidnay's laws on property are even harsher than Tyr's old codes
Guild Assessment
Recommended Team Size: 2-3 members
Required Skills: Stealth, investigation, Kalidnayan market knowledge
Estimated Duration: 10-14 days
DM Notes (Hidden)
Benefactor True Nature: Exactly who he claims (Morek is genuinely a freed gladiator with a sentimental request)
Trustworthiness: Mostly honest (he downplays how much he HATES Torval)
Moral Axis: Helps the powerless / Modest pay
Actual Danger: As stated
Additional Hook: The memory-stone contains more than combat techniques. Rakkan the Unbroken witnessed something in Kalidnay's old arena—something Ka-Tet would prefer stay forgotten.
