To an outsider, Grandmother Stone appears to be an exposed rock beside the creek. This is because she is an exposed rock beside the creek. She is also considerably more than that.
Her sense of time has little in common with that of fairies, animals or humans. A conversation begun in the morning may be answered by evening. A hard question can take several days, and she will not be hurried through one.
She remembers forests that no longer exist. She remembers generations of oconee bells. Most of all, she remembers the years in which the outside world was certain the Hidden Bell had gone.
