Murphy, of clan Aleco, lives in the settlement of Durgis Rock. He ended up there following a surprise attack by orcs on his home clan. At the time, Murphy was asleep, and when he was roused by the sounds of combat, he was horrified to find that he had no weaponry or armor close at hand. With no way to strike out at the orcs, he hid, escaping to Durgis Rock. After that day, he swore that a lack of a good steel battlehammer would not prevent him from caving in Orc skulls. To this end, he adopted the road of the defender, teaching others his techniques as he travels.

Unlike some other defenders, Murphy does not put much stock in the whole "Oneness with the universe" claptrap some of them spout. Instead, Murphy specialized in using whatever he can get his hands on (or his hands if that's all there is) into a dangerous weapon. He has put an end to more than one brawl with little more than a tankard of ale and a leg of lamb.

Murphy also has exceptional tolerance to pain. Whether this is because of his training, or the amount of alcohol he likes to consume is unclear.
