...and thus it came to be that the orc-kin of the Urkrypt, foul with black magic, descended upon the men of Phandalin. Under the banner of Pact Lord Aldith Tresendar, the ground bled black with orcish blood, but it served no matter, for the hour had turned. The screams of the men and women of Phandalin are said even to this day to haunt the ruins of that blasted city. -Atlavast, Scribe of Deneir

Overview

Phandalin was, at one time, an important trade and farming center located northeast of Leilon, where the Triboar Cutoff East fades into a trail. The road was abandoned after years of orc attacks obliterated every caravan that passed down the road, conquering Phandalin in the process. When the orcs were driven out, the walled town was left largely in ruins, and so it remained for many years. For many years, no one lived in the ruined walls but monsters, though passing hunters and rangers often camped in one of the more secure buildings.

In 1367, a small number of settlers and prospectors from Neverwinter and Waterdeep began to resettle the old ruins on the promise of rediscovering the great mithril and platinum mines of the fabled Phandelver Pact. By 1372, the frontier folk had formed a small village with a limited functioning government.
