Valin Arkanian
Valin Arkanian is an expatriate Red Wizard of Thay who happened upon a remarkable find: a well-preserved academy of magic and artifice from ancient Imaskar. Since unearthing this remarkable discovery, he has become perhaps the foremost living authority on matters of Imaskari artifice and lore. He has entered a partnership with Zulkir Yaphyll, and together they have uncovered a great amount of knowledge previously thought lost.
He retains a significant advantage over his Red Wizard colleague(s), in that he has chanced into the role of Master for all of the automata of the facility (of which there are a considerable number), as well as the great vaults of knowledge which answer only to him. It also seems this university of magic had more aims than simple enlightenment, as many powerful weapons, some unique among all Imaskar, were concocted therein, and are now at his command, to the extent that they still function.
Valin remains an unknown agent, maintaining good relations with those he must, but ultimately serving himself, and his own quest for knowledge. The depth of his connection with the site, now called Ashanath, has been the subject of concern for the powers in the region who know of its existence.

Interesting Facts
*Valin stole the prototype of Thay's first self-produced smokepowder weapon. This hasn't exactly earned him a soft spot in Aznar Thrul's heart. *Valin has had an on-again, off-again (mostly off-again) romance with the courtesan and spy Aurora of Eltabbar. *Valin likes nuts and Priadoran Tea. *He maintains good relations with neighboring Nar tribes as well as the nearby village of Tharmstead. Most people think of him as a harmless hermit, who occasionally brings wonderful toys into town. *He has several personal animated guardians, including a hunter-killer construct with the appearance of a half-orc (repurposed to suit), and an animate adamantine suit of dwarven full plate mail.
