AHS1-1: Demons

"Demons" is the first episode of American Hero Story.

Story

Session 1: From Russia With Love

On a routine, nightly patrol, Violet encounters a deal between some out-of-town lowlives and Russian mobsters. She shakes up their day and leaves them for the cops; and that would seem to have been that.

Kat later encounters--of all things--a rogue demon (some sort of lust monster) stalking her and her school friends. She manages to trap the demon inside a skeezy gym teacher, but can't quite figure out how to banish it.

Sylvia informs the group that she's received a Globe Security bulletin about a possible class 5 threat in the city, and that she should be lying low. Mac calls Vi to let her know some Russian mobster is in town (as if she hadn't already found out), and that it might be connected to the spooky world.

Vi takes the trapped demon to the the Wizard of Boston, who has the facilities needed to banish the creature outright. As minor a demon as it is, it puts up quite a fight, only yielding when Vi harness her nascent blood magic to drain its lifeforce.

That night, with the help of Globe's omnipresent security cameras, they find the mobster, overseeing yet another deal near the old docks. They move out to observe. As they're spying, they encounter a strange interloper: his flaming motorcycle hardly screams "subtle", and his pickup line of "let's fight!" leaves much to be desired, but like him or not, Damien is here.

Session 2: The Tablet of Fate

Damien fight. Follow mobster to warehouse. Steal tablet. Sylvia's place shot up, flee to Marlowe's.

Session 3: Scumbuckets

Marlowe's. Vi talks to Mac, then goes to meet James, who never shows, but leaves her a mysterious cupcake. She goes home for blood and rest.

Kat is pulled out school by Sylvia (care of Julian), who quickly brings her to the mansion, as she's discovered that someone besides Ivanov is stalking the party. When normal means fail to get a hold of Vi, Kat tries a bit of inception-via-bathtub.

Vi wakes up, just in time to ready herself, as Ivanov's thugs have descended on her home!

Session 4: The Fall

Vi vs the Wrath Demon. Vi wins, then escapes by stealing Jake's lamborghini. Meet up at the mansion, discuss mysterious cupcakes. Follow up by breaking into James' place.

At James' library, they find a secret door, beyond which are texts explaining the Enochii and that whole deal. They realize they will need some Holy Oil to stop the Hound, and the only person who can get them some is...Paris.

At the Underworld club, they meet with Paris, who offers a trade. They compete in an arena, battling a rock titan, some rogue vampires, and finally a voidwalker. Then they chillax with Paris, who gives them the oil, and explains all about this Hound character, and what he intends to do to Ivanov. He convinces Vi to trade her likeness for some juicy intel on James' master (Roland Black, aka John Dee), and gets Kat to trade a memory from "her last year" for knowledge of rituals to trap angels.

On the way out of the club, their elevator is bombed. By their powers combined (with help from some cottonballs), they survive the impact...just barely. Vi drains herself dry and ends up slaughtering a shelter of puppies; Kat is hospitalized briefly but more or less fine, but Sylvia is paralyzed.

Session 5: The Black Halo

The party convalesces. Sylvia is down for the count, but she urges the others to go on. Julian is there to ensure Kat that her friend will be alright...and to urge her not to press on, that in this matter he must act alone. He gallavants off, and she promptly ignores his request.

Mac has determined that the mobsters are converging on an island containing an old lighthouse--a perfect spot for a massive, dangerous ritual. For want of a boat, Vi invokes Jake, who can only offer his lesser yacht, as his primary one is drifting in the Atlantic.

They set out--Mac, Jake, and Damien accompanying--into the gathering winter storm. Before they reach the lighthouse, they are set upon by a small armada of boats, replete with well-armed mobsters.

Session 6: He Does Not Forget

They battle the mobsters, and win, albeit messily. When they arrive, they find that the Hound has narrowly beaten them to it. Remnants of a pitched battle include only one survivor--Ivanov. His ritual is ruined, and he is helpless to the Hound...who is in a standoff with Julian, who begs him not to continue his killing spree. Cairne isn't so easily swayed, and when Damien presses the attack, shots are fired...both Hound and his prey are mortally wounded.

Although unable to alter reality, Julian is able to bend the rules a bit. He sends the party back in time, to give them the advantage they need over the Hound. They are able to prepare the battlefield--after ensuring Jake's timely arrival in a previous session with a bit of creative anachronism--and this time, when Cairne arrives, he finds resistance. He is unable to stop the ritual, but that's okay...because, as planned, the ritual is hijacked by Damien and Kat's secretly-prepared one, casting everyone present into Hell itself.

There, they see the truth of the matter. Ivanov is on the very edge, seconds from careening into the Abyss, even as a host of Dark Masters look on in expectation. Julian intercedes, preventing Ivanov's fall, but is unable to pull him back. The Hound, separated from his angelic mantle by Kat's prepared circle, is powerless to pursue his charge. All rests in Ivanov's hands, as the party tries to convince him to turn away, to accept Julian's aid...but cannot face the weight of his sins, and falls into the Abyss.

Before the Dark Ones can descend on the party, they are whisked away to a place beyond time and space. They face the Fallen, who are most interested in what will happen next. In the real world, Cairne is cut off from his mantle by a circle even they cannot break. Should he die, his mantle will be lost to them--unless, of course, another mortal claims it. The Hound, it seems, is mortally diseased, doomed to die swiftly without the mantle, so the time for a decision is nigh.

The Fallen try to play hardball, but Kat refuses to be intimidated. She has all the leverage--the mantle is hers to claim, or to allow to dissipate--and if they want it back, they'll have to pay. Ultimately, they agree to the terms: all those slain in the battle are rescued, and Ivanov's soul is reclaimed from the Abyss by the sacrifice of one of the Fallen.

The party returns to reality, where Cairne is dying, finally free of the mantle. He explains that it was all to keep his daughter safe, and that he wants her to know he is gone, without ever having to know what he has done. Julian assures him that his will will be done, that his testament is heard. With that, Cairne consigns himself to death, and to Perdition. To this, Julian responds:

"He does not forget. He does not abandon His children. Tonight, you shall taste Paradise." And in a ray of purest sunlight, Cairne's body dissolves, and Julian guides his soul into the waiting arms of Salvation.
