Session 3 of The Long Walk, the 2nd episode of the 1st season of A Brighter Sun (Overall session #6).

Synopsis

SESSION SUMMARY

The party camps at a fortress, engaging in campfire discussions about separating from troublesome Akshay and Vael's group. Nua detects an underground cavern with arcane disturbances via fungal network. Dakhan hosts a supper where Evi probes the priestess of Khalid Ma about her faith, witnessing celestial and void magic demonstrations, and shares stories with Dakhan. The group hunts a young kank for meat, sells excess, and endures dust devils, haboobs, and silt storms, creating an earth pit shelter during one. They split from Vael's team at a rest stop. Pip revives a petrified tree with time magic, restarting an ecosystem but awakening a psychic fungal network that assaults their minds with rage.

You're camped. A fortress. Solid stone walls. Guards. Other travelers. Commissar. A few merchants. From your entire party. This is a bit of a night. Even though it's almost midnight. It's like ceiling. Sleep just yet. There's a campfire outside. It's a little... a little chilly. The fire makes us nice. We devoted some of those precious cargo into the guitar. The guild, mostly, has gathered around Vael had to go do his own events. Yes, nobody missed it. I was trying to get as well as a little bit of a table time. My new friend. It is... I'm beating the fire. God knows what. I mean, the most common... Fuel is Animal Dung. That's way more... there's tons of it with these Mechalots around. And there's not a lot of wood to burn. Maybe some Roper Flake, but it's not that dry. Probably the Acer Carapace. Roper Carapace is probably flammable, but it's pretty dry. But it's also useful, so you don't necessarily want to do that. Nua is... well he would contemplate the next guy if you guys could fucking see anything. It's a little depressing having the answer to your case, but the price of scientific accuracy that somehow was necessary in a magical way. Does anyone else do music? I do some. I think she plays like the piano, or she's not more the organ or whatever. They do have one of the guild halls. They don't have one in this traveling court, but I don't really get like that. I know you've got a few. You probably have a great voice. And her, she has various instruments. Where is the That's why I'm just playing on fire. Hers is violin. But it gets pretty fiery, so she also was kind of in rage. Recent rage, so I'm gonna break my violin, put my rage into the... She's certainly not gonna go Kong. The Fear Bowl. I wonder if she's asleep or just meditating. But this is how she looks when she's talking to the Earth, keeling out for miles. The, uh, the mull is... He spent a while tending to the animals, making sure they were secure and had a system of food. He did the thankless task of Shuffling Mekkilot, Dunn Over You don't want the fresh stuff, because that's gonna be too moist. With the dry stuff going through. The... The barricacra is probably falling there. I don't need a failstick family. That guy. He's a problem. He looks, uh, not too accusingly at Akshay. But you know, he's gotta learn. He's cocky, thinks he's all that. And he is some of that, but- He could accomplish two missions in one. Tail-sweep. That's probably worthy of some demerits. Don't know how he feels about protected species and all that, but definitely provoking an attack when he should have known it was out of his league. And if he was specifically expecting me and your team and the demon's hand to fill in, that's That's not acceptable. I don't think we should cancel the mission just yet. I mean, there's people in that caravan. I would suggest a separation. I think we should send him and the birds of the lady back. It's not really protocol. They still have their mission. They can lead off on their line. I don't know if I can get the job done. You guys have enough video. It's more than likely that the caravan that they're tracking went the wrong way. It would have been safer for a caravan because of all time. They wouldn't have taken the shortcut that we're going to try and take. That way we could cover two birds with one stone too because... The caravan is going to have... You know, we're a lifestyle. We can tolerate them for a little while longer. Because if we find the caravan on our side and they go the other way and they don't, it doesn't really matter. I do think you're right. That's where I'm going to start looking. I think I might hold on to his or whoever until we're sure we need it. It's a lot harder for him to pick a fight with a sword. I can't at least see it coming. But he could have done it with a sword on that last one, so it's reasonable, but I've grazed it with my hand, so... I would have liked to see how he would have fared against that rumor, because... I think it would have been a humbling experience. He's actually already kind of an amiss about not being part of the fight anyway. Oh no. He's pressured that he didn't get attacked by the rover. It's probably unethical, but I was considering seeing if I could provoke him into challenging Samira to a new war. It would be so hard. I can't go any minute of it. That would be such a fun thing to watch. I'd enjoy that. You need not like a correction. That would not be honorable. That would be like punching a baby. Careful, man. Yay! That thing, I mean, we probably should have seen that, but you know, that's the beauty coming out of the wastes. It's a million ways to die. No, actually, that creature was very smart. I was tricked into believing it was a tree because there used to be a tree there. So it took the position of something that in the past was a tree, so hence, when I observed it, I thought that was just a... Disturbing. that you found in a doll. They are creatures. The Earth. They live in caverns deep below. They are not well suited for this environment. Why would it have been towards the surface? It must have been pressured. I think somebody was chasing it. If you see, this whole thing used to be a sea, a giant sea. and so things like the Manta learned to change. Deep below this silt there are many caverns carved by the ancient waterway. Caverns it probably used to live inside. Something even stronger displaced it. Something that had Use of the cavern. There is something strange deep below that sense. Something handmade. Something focusing arcane energy. Possibly, likely, that could have displaced the creature and any creatures that didn't have a capability to migrate to the surface. So they have perished. I will ask the fungal network. He just pushes our hand into the... They struggle in this environment relative to the... We're not in the salt region. You are at the edge of the silt, so... Yeah. When you were on the road before... This is obviously, this is obviously like the whole ancient sea. This is the deep part of the sea where all the salt lasts. And this is probably somewhere where there's a deeper spring to water. Basically, yeah, in that scrub area, it's like Northern California. There's lots of brush and stuff, and there's anywhere from a meter to maybe 10 meters of soil before bedrock. Down here, there's like another 10 meters of silt. Yeah. But in the center, it probably gets fairly deep with the packed silt. But yeah, they struggle to reach all that extra weight of the surface. And in the deeper parts, there's probably no fungus near the surface, but here you can still sense their feelers. They grow more sparsely out here, but they're still connected all the way to those deep caverns. And you can confirm there's a cavern down there that they were just cored out of it. All of their Neural, you know, being there was just quickly carved out and they still feel that echoing pain and they don't know what it was and they can't sense inside the cavern anymore. Which general direction do they kind of... Down there. Down? Like is it... You're not directly above it. I would say it's, um, it's north of here. Maybe... probably about It starts maybe 50 meters down and goes hundreds of meters further. And, but horizontally it's almost a mile away. And that's probably why she was having trouble sensing what was beyond it. But also it might be warded against that kind of sensing. Yeah. You do know that you saw, you're recalling as you do with great clarity, that When on that clear day you saw an obelisk that was in the direction that would have been like right at the edge of that mountain range, the north. And it was definitely something very man-made about those obelisks. It was already explained by the architect. How far do the obelisks go out? Like are we at the extent- That might be one of the furthest ones. Okay. But... Because he essentially was an extension of his magic and inputs from Tyr, so... Fort Scott is under the Tyrion flag. It's, you know, an official holding. But so is Fort Scott. So, like, they may go further. The architect explained that there are crystal conduits that trace from the undercraft of the city miles and miles to these remote obelisks. But he didn't and give you like a map of where they all are. There's literally a physical connection all the way back to Tyr so that his magical self could just propagate anywhere in his realm. If we pass within reasonable distance of one, she is going to physically inspect. We could definitely take a visit on the way back to Maranatha Countdown. I don't think the cologne will be cune unless you guys want to sneak away at night and do an all-nighter. I mean, it's perfectly safe here. It is perfectly safe here, but I am... Kinda dangerous. I mean, it is so close. Who knows, if something might have happened by the time we get back. I don't know about digging down 500 meters, but... You don't need to dig. But if the opulists are connected to an underground crystal network... Nobody's a problem to solve, but... It's true. We can do it all the way back. It's my curiosity. It's taken... It's really, it's not about... it's about maintaining, but also improving upon the relationship with him to what degree she can. Exactly. It's the guise of small talk with subtle probing and inquiries. And allowing him to believe that I am interested in him, that benefits me. Right? Like, she's gonna play that game and she's like, I sense that he's interested and I need to, I want to gauge whether or not I should play that game. It's a three-way conversation with minor input from the vizier over the course of like a formal supper. He does indeed have Fine foods and wines and only the best for his companion. But she is every bit as sharp and clover. And she's not hostile. She is... She's kind of doing what you're doing. She's trying to get him interested because she is a priestess of the goddess that was the sorcerer queen and there's this whole new religion, but the priest-caste are the administrative branch of Kateth's government. And so she is effectively on the same level as him in her hometown, and she wants to forge strong links. You get the sense that Kalanay is small and not wealthy compared to Tyr, and they want to improve their economic situations. They have resources to offer. Tyr also does this trade there. I guess I'm just more on the curiosity side of things. Is my Celestial side getting a pull towards this Priestess as if she is actually connected to a... You can... Definitely find out more if she uses magic. So you can try to convince her to do that. You did see her cast a spell though, and it's definitely celestial magic. But you could also just probe her about her religion, you know, to know more. Yeah, that's exactly what she's gonna do. That's why I'm gonna get a feel for her through asking about her religion. That's what the Celestial lead interested in with her. It's like, are you genuine or are you just somebody who's taking advantage of the absence of... Roll a Risma check. The one of the servants, actually, and... 18 plus my 11 is like a 29. Excellent. You learn many things. The priest does not learn much about you. She's probing, but you're controlling the conversation. And Dakhan does learn a few things about you. So you can say what you want to know from both of them, and then I'll say what they learn about you in return. Okay. And from her, You can learn three things. Okay, three things from each? Three things! Yeah, it's only fair. Yeah. So from her, I want to know the, um, one, the recency with which she has taken to the priesthood. So, she has, the faith is New by faith standards, but it is a few centuries old. So she was born to it, her mother was a priestess. But things have changed substantially over her life. Like, she wasn't born in Calabney because Calabney was not a functioning city. Catette lived in a holding of the city and involved the priests, including her eventually, in the cleansing and rebuilding efforts. The city was plagued with darkness and shadow and undead. And under the glorious Queen's guidance and by the grace of Khalid Ma, it has been restored and is the jewel of the Tablelands Open flowing aqueducts, abundant water, a fertile floodplain, all recreated. Last Oasis was where she grew up and it was a core, by her time it was a thriving town, but It was a very small core group that got this whole thing started. And Last Oasis is what it's called. Interesting. The current project is to expand Colonnades, Blood Plains, so far that it actually merges with the Oasis. Got it. But right now that's all Silt Sea, so it's a big epic magical terraforming project. Got it. And... But I mean, she... She has no end of good things to say about how wonderful a job Khachat has done and how glorious and beautiful the city is, etc. So when she's speaking about it, she doesn't speak as much about the religion, she speaks more to the leadership of the region. Yeah, I mean, she can explain the tenets, basically the Khalid Ma's great sacrifice caused her to ascend It's a little bit like the Salarian religion that there's a lot of sun worship as opposed to sun glorification. And it's very different from the rhetoric of the arc. Like, that's their whole thing. Their magic is not the arcane magic of the sorcerer kings, although Kattet does have that too. It's divine magic that Like, all gods may be dead, but that doesn't mean there can't be new gods. And, you know, you've seen it. It does seem to have that flavor, but how Khalid Ma could have actually done that? I mean, if she could do that, why are the other ones messing around becoming dragons? Or we could just become a god? But obviously, she has been taught a faith and is not necessarily the originator of the ideas. Right, and this could just be somebody who is creating themselves as a cult of personality. into a god. That's the kind of vibe I'm getting from her. The con is going to spend one of his questions learning something he already knows. But you don't know that he knows. What he's really learning is that you don't remember that. But he has a simple question after you demonstrate your musical prowess. Where did you study? I studied in the palace where you grew up. You do a good job of standing around it. I learned as early as I can remember. Yeah, you don't remember a time when you weren't doing something musical. You know, you played for court officials and fancy folk. I lean towards the family element. I played with my sisters. Exactly. We all learned together. Yeah, you can tell the emotional details without telling the factual ones. Exactly. He must know that formerly trained Pyrene who don't hide themselves in public, you've got to be some sort of time lost or something. And He gets a hint about your amnesia and his mental guess that you might actually date back to the old kingdom is more strongly affirmed. I'm going to ask him to tell the story of the betting game with Lumi that lost him his house. It's one of those like he doesn't want to talk about but she's like, okay, now do tell. She is. I was quite certain that he made an example of it just didn't seem all that useful to me to avoid martyrdom when his cult-like following had already been dispatched, nor to exact any sort of payment from ransom when those who loved him most dearly had already been given. But she must have a greater understanding Sorcerer King's motive. The gladiator remains a prisoner. And I have to go find myself. That feeling, that must have been what you saw. The moment of loss, true suffering. You wouldn't have risked it I hope he didn't desire that. Perhaps I'm a little too self-destructive for my own good. It sounds like a fresh wine. There's nothing wrong with self-destruction. Self-creation becomes the problem. Yeah, you should get a chance to meet, well, you will get a chance to talk to these priests, their understanding of the Void. Considering their goddess lives in the Void, they'd better understand it. I'm gonna try to get her to demonstrate it with more of a duration cast so that I can examine the magic a little bit more and see where... I was like, if you're actually tapping a god, It's different than if you were putting on the air of celestial magic. You managed to sell it without coming off as you're saying, prove it. I don't believe you. And Dakhan is also very interested in her magic as you're both students of the arcane. Celestial magic is so because it is fundamentally powerful, not from the earth. as our payment defiles the show. It is the sun, the cosmos of Sambra, that which birthed this world, that which ignited the sun in the first place, the sun of the cosmos. The sun of the cosmos. I can only access it due to the grace of Kali-bha. She is about this energy. She speaks words in the old Kaliknese harsh consonants with a single consonant vowel sound and the onk on her forehead glows. The golden light that forms, it's like sunlight but it feels warm like it's Penetrating your bones and warming them up. The aches and pains of your voyage are soothed. This night can heal. And it can wear a little. A boat smoke will faint as a calmest judgment. But it has an offset. This ball of black and purple The light doesn't seem to merely be occluded by it, but to fall into it. The nearby candles are leaning in its direction and dimming. The void is also part of the gods' souls. It is the fabric from which all things were woven, infinite possibility. And yet, and she flips it over at a candle and it passes through and just annihilates everything it touched causing the top of the candle to just flop and fall. Incompatible with light swinging at it. With effort who commands it to recede it. It's like, hey, no, no. And it heats itself evaporating that burst of light. It too dies, but when darkness dies it becomes light. And the circle is complete. Her holy symbol behind the ankh there's this like almost yin-yang type thing where the darkness becomes the light and the light becomes the darkness. Magnificent. There can be no doubt. Khalid Ma's divinity. Perhaps the other kings Queens Island are only that. But I doubt they would have the metal to do as she did. I am very much looking forward to seeing your sites of worship as we ride with the city. You mentioned sisters, so if you probes about the contact that you've kept up and learns that you haven't spoken to them in a while. There was a bit of a row involving your shared father and you parted on good terms with most of them and would really like to maybe have a conversation. I'd really like to reconnect, but existence has been difficult. Your sisters are still so gone. I just want to try and get to know what he hopes to gain from his venture in this new city. At first, it was purely economical. The prospects are quite intriguing. There is a fertile land with many resources. and could very much benefit from Tyr and Iron and Blader. But I am as much interested in this faith. I feel Tyr has lost its way, while few miss the King himself. They took for granted the meek possibility of a pirate. Some whisper of a new especially the Templars. But I believe they simply desire meaning, purpose in their own way, which must be shaken by its death. Perhaps they could find that meaning in such a pure, righteous path. Our Templars are holy. Men, our partners and clergy. They are wise as much as they are strong, find great fulfillment in their purpose. Perhaps your Templars could learn, thank you. Are you potentially looking to expand your faith's reach into Tyr? It is Holy Commandment. She is the life-giver. Places like Tyr, especially, are in great need. The sorcerer kings can stall the effects of their own deflation. How did you find your outreach when you were there? Most surprisingly, we were not Proceed well by the civilians. They do not recognize Sky-Gon's divinity. They think perhaps we have bumbled into their faith and misattributed into her. I have spoken with her and heard her voice, there is no doubt. And they are all born to their gift. Those who are free from the sun's curse. Unable to teach that gift to anyone. They are sorcerers, just like their founder, who have made a faith of a gift that is personal. And I fear their zeal may know no bounds. The founder herself now fancies herself a new sorcerer queen if she won't admit it. and Challenges the Rule of All, the Name of the Revolution. I believe in time Khalid Ma can bring lush green lands to Tyr restore the waterways, but it would be difficult to restore every city all in Shepard. And if this sorceress can do such things, What end would she stop at? The Sumerians are dangerous, but the people of Tyr are wise. The common folks see the risk of this path, and our shrines have already grown. The Senator was kind enough to donate to our gods. It was nothing that is more than worthy I wish to help them build a proper temple. I have a feeling that might be helpful. We can provide guidance, really. But the Templars seem unwilling to provide to their own people. Hmm. Seems like a noble venture. Pythias is not a fan, but the Senate his final say. She's gonna go through her arcane magic learning experiences, because that's easy, tell the truth, that is the most recent. But when he presses you, what was the first spell you mastered? Well, I mean, it's time, but we're taught that by Celestial in your head and also yourself. I mean you knew it you just needed to learn how to do it arcanely. So a voice... maybe you pass it off almost like a Phantom of the Opera story like it's just mysterious. I go for it's instinctive. Like it's something I always knew how to do. She picks up a produce options that he has available. Does he actually have active produce options? Oh, yeah. Tons of fresh fruit. Okay, so I'm going to get one that an unripened fruit. It's always been second natured. You demonstrate the form perfectly, and it's... She brings the fruit to its ripest. Fruit is now at its optimum. Easier mastered by those of the art than the most. I respect Lumia, but I believe that she can help you perfect this. It can scale to tremendous power. You are also wise to make use of the written word of teachers. Many sorcerers simply trust their own instincts and find themselves unlimitable. My hair is certainly common to our own, I imagine, much bigger than I'm able to do. No problem. I have been impatient in my own studies, but time has rewarded me. I'm still vigorous, Fergith Yonkey, and I feel I have much yet to learn, but patience. There are so many fine things to learn in this particular part. And as you camp out for midday, as it's peaking into the 120s, it's tricky. You end up having to drink twice as much water as you normally would. You were already, like, losing it in the morning, and you couldn't wait for them to call a break, and then you just snooze under the sun like a lizard. And everyone else is just sitting in the tents, just trying not to move, and just... drinking tons of water, resisting the urge to dump it on yourself. I'm just starving. Drinking water is the best way to stay cool. It doesn't even matter if the water is warm itself. Although, one fun trick you can do, you can take perfectly clean water, put it in the pitcher of purification, and it always comes out of cold. So, it just magically cools the water, so you can always get cool water. That's nice. Awesome. And, uh, If you were willing to set up a waterproof basin of some sort, he might have a bathtub in his crazy tent. You could dump the water on yourself and then scoop it back into the pitcher and just dump it again. You'll still lose water to evaporation though. It's not a great idea. Just drink it and be hot. This was probably an inland sea. So this soil is fertile if you can get some water. This is what it would look like after a fresh rain and then it dries out. But you can see there's a lot of plants, withered plants that are like barely protruding, but When it rains they probably light up and blossom and shrivel back down. It's crusted over because it has a brain that I want to... But it's almost like a coral-like In a few places you can see petrified wood, but this fungus is just clinging to it with little nodules in there. It's very colorful with different bulbs and variations. Obviously it's right up Pip's alley. Oh, okay. Yep, watching. Fungus covered petrified tree. The fungus tells Pip that It's really dry. The fungus mind is almost comatose. It's just in a torpor waiting for some water. So I'm going to... the one with the most green exposed. And I'm going to press, like, get the EC down. When everything within it starts moving very fast, the fungal growth and the fun grows. There's a few waves of it. This one is like, because it was so polished by the wind, it's hard for the fungus to stick to. Underneath the wood is beautiful colors as the minerals have replaced it. And you see that process play back in reverse as... 2,000 years of precipitation rewind and as the final colors of the mineral shining surface disappear, you just see a dry withered husk slowly gets a little more luminous, a little more robust, and then suddenly There's an explosion. What is it? Oh, it just bursts with leaves. One of these long, like, willow vines that is draped down. And it actually grows. It was much bigger when it was alive. You were just seeing a stump with a few dried fruits. It's like 80 or 90 feet tall and maybe 200 feet wide. It bursts into the time bubble, but it was probably time to stop anyway. We didn't want to unmake the tree. There's a blanket of moss underneath and literally water just emerges from time and then spreads in every direction as the... There's like butterflies and bugs and small birds just plucked out of time itself. Underneath the tree, that carpet of moss fades near the edges as the others ride up to see what the hell just happened. And as they're taking it in, you feel a thick, moist spark shizzling. It's sad because this tree is going to dry out and it won't last, but This is just the beginning. Oh. Bael's not such a bad guy. Hey, he's not a sh**. He had so much of that rage built up and...
