Thornmother Pesk
Head of the council of brewers, and the individual who has declined the Goblin King's overtures four times in polite language. She sells to the Hunt, to the Kingdom through intermediaries, and to anyone else with the price, and she has never once been caught selling the same compound as both the poison and the cure — though everyone assumes she has.
In Person
Small, hunched, thorn-scarred, and formidably calm. She conducts business in the Quill's brewing rooms, working while she talks, and has a habit of handing a visitor something to hold — a jar, a stem, a stoppered flask — and watching what they do with it. This is a test and she does not pretend otherwise.
She is genuinely hospitable. Guests are fed, housed, and guided out safely, including guests she has refused, and the consistency of it is why she has been able to refuse so many.
History
Thornmother for thirty-eight years, which is an office rather than a title of blood: the head of the Brewers' Council is chosen by the family houses and can be unchosen. She has survived four attempts to unchoose her, each by a different house, each ended without violence and without anyone being able to say precisely how.
Her tenure's defining choice was the Unsworn Position, and she made it early. When the Goblin King first came asking, she received him, fed him, sold him what he needed, and declined to swear — and has repeated that exact sequence three times since. The Barrens have stayed out of two wars because of it.
Method
Trade secrets and hospitality, in that order. Recipes are family property, the Quill is unfindable without a guide, and the province's entire political structure is an argument about intellectual property conducted with poison. Pesk arbitrates it.
Her leverage on the outside world is simpler: everyone gets sick eventually. Hearthroot cures the wasting fever, hearthroot grows here, and Kingdom physicians who denounce goblins in the morning ride out to Ninth Kiln after dark.
Household
The Brewers' Council. Nine family houses, each guarding recipes, each convinced it is owed more. Pesk's real job.
The Fire Rota. Emberline's burn crews, who decide what burns and when. Formally a technical office. Practically the province's agriculture, and a house that annoys them finds its groves scheduled early.
The Physicians' Road. Her discreet trade with the Kingdom: hearthroot out, unmarked coin in, no records either side, and the reason the Barrens have never needed a protector.
Relations
Cordial and unsworn with the Goblin King, whose hospitality she returns and whose oath she declines. Businesslike with Iron Jarl Gorrach, who buys remedies and does not press her.
The Long Memory — pukwudgies who consider the Unsworn Position cowardice — have started talking to Gorrach's people. Pesk knows. Pesk has done nothing, and both the Council and the Hunt are reading that differently.
Reputation
In the Wilds: the woman who has said no to a king four times and is still trading with him, which is regarded as its own kind of power. In the Kingdom: a poisoner, officially; the last hope of a great many physicians, privately.
Everyone assumes she has sold the same compound as both the poison and the cure. She has never denied it. She has also never done it, and the assumption is worth more to her than the truth.
Hooks
- A Kingdom physician orders hearthroot in a quantity that implies an epidemic nobody has announced, for delivery inside the Ring.
- Fool's hearthroot turns up in a shipment under a Brewers' house seal. Either a house is committing murder for hire or is being framed, and Pesk cannot trust one of her own to find out.
- The Long Memory want an introduction carried to Gorrach. Carrying it makes the party party to it.
- Somebody is pulling up the old Kingdom border stones, one a week, from the far end, working toward the Quill. Pesk has kept those stones upright and legible for four centuries on purpose.
"She handed me a stoppered flask and kept talking. I held it for a quarter of an hour without asking. She sold to me after that."
