BDH1-1
BDH1-1, "The Edge of Glory", was episode 1 of Season 1 of the game Big Damn Heroes.
Story
Billy informs the party of a suspicious misfortune affecting a celebrity musician, Rose Sebert. The party investigates, ousting a demonic presence from her. Following the lead of its sigil, they track down a demon known to grant wishes in exchange for souls. He denies and responsibility, but hints at the direction they should be looking.
It turns out another celebrity is in town, Hayley Paige Henson, who bears an interesting similarity to the late Rose: they were both past their prime, and out of the public spotlight, and had both recently come back with surprising success. In Rose's case, she passed away exactly one year after her miraculous comeback began; in Hayley's case, the one-year mark is only days away.
And of course, the other similarity was that both had signed with Helicon Records, based in Boston.
Jake and Sylvia approach the Helicon executives, using their influence to gain a meeting with one Melody Crane, a senior partner. She and the other two partners turn out to be fabulously beautiful, devastatingly clever, and subtlely powerful women, who only want to help their clients reach their full potential. Hmm.
Suspecting the involvement of muses, they head to Club S, they confront Paris. He demures, seemingly physically unable to say much on the subject, but implies that they should steer well clear of ancient gods. Between his information and their own research, they realize that the Muses aren't the ones killing their charges.
The Fates, it seems, do not appreciate the Muses' attempt to recapture their lost grandeur, and have been punishing them, foiling the subtle magic of their plot by cutting off their charges at the very edge of glory. With the deaths, they have issued an ultimatum: surcease, or be destroyed.
Unfortunately, the Muses have no intention of going down without a fight, and a battle between gods tends to leave cities in a bad way. Cleverly, Jake offers to represent Hades as a proxy, serving as a mediator in the dispute between Muse and Fate. Paris facilitates.
When the time comes, the Fates arrive, in all their terrible beauty, an awesome spectacle. Then they all sit down for tea and chat, while Jake pitches an alternative to their strife: the Muses shall surcease their magical interference, and instead author a more subtle scheme, serving as judges on a reality television show that will find unsung voices and guide them to their rightful glory. A win-win scenario.
With the situation resolved, Hayley unfortunately finds herself without her magically-renewed prowess, and facing a grand concert that very night. Rather than leave her to twist in the wind, the party springs to action; Sylvia gives Hayley a "boost" in her farewell performance, and leaves the crowd in tears.
