Zaki is the first son of the el Hazred family, a established family of spellcasters and conjurers that has faded in prominence during the reign of Zahar el Hazred, a Vizer and teacher. Zaki believes that he can reverse this course if he uses the notes and books of his great grandfather, Abdullah, to establish a compact with a powerful alien spirit like his grandfather did.
The problem: Zaki's understanding of the old alienist's books is incomplete, and his ritual to compact with a spirit is designed based upon a misunderstanding of the term "Beyond the veil of Stars"....
The legend of Abdullah el'Hazred
Abdullah was a Calashite Warlock. He claims to have bargained with every power, offering his soul in return for power. Using these bargains, he managed to play the major powers against each other as he sought to increase his knowledge and magic until he was able to discover a ritual to allow him to bargain with a force he simply called, "The Outer Darkness." With this bargain he carved himself a place in Calimport's magical circles, using his minion, a creature he called a "Shoggoth," to tear apart all those who would move against him. He established a position in the lower boundaries of the upper class before all the powers that he bargained with came to collect what they were owed. They tore him apart in the middle of the day, plucking him from the Calimport street.
The plan, and what went wrong
Zaki had intended to use what he could access in the temple of Denir of his great-grandfather's notes to summon forth the Outer Darkness and strike a bargain with it. But the notes he had access to were torn from several different of his notebooks, and Zaki confused the powers of the Stars with the Outer Darkness that lies beyond. This is probably for the best as a true creature of the outer darkness would have probably eaten his face and then destroyed half of Calimshan.
When he summoned the forces of the Celestial Clockwork, he demanded a bargain for a soul for three boons.
- The ability to let his enemies know his displeasure with his touch.
- To never be without defenses.
- A servant to carry out his will.
