Koukora

Koukora is a village on the island of Onaona in the Dragon Crescent. It is the largest city on the island, and the only city with an Imperial presence.

The population consists of 72 islanders, 34 imperials, 3 lizardfolk, and 1 tigran. While the village is in the same location as its original discovery, experts believe the city is transient, as the natives follow the movements of fish populations. The primary evidence of this belief is the existence of multiple native burial grounds throughout the island, all of which follow the coast of the deeper bays.

Facilities for travelers include a tavern, an inn of sorts, and a temple to Varuna. Natives have been known to offer hospitality for little or no cost, since they do not receive many visitors from distant origins.

The Seashells

Named for the three seashell-like facades atop the conical roofs of the building, this tavern has stood for 18 years under the patronage of one Murta Ironscar, a 58-year-old imperial man. Complementing his surprisingly wide array of beverages are a variety of local dishes, such as poi and grilled fish, as well as imperial favorites such as beef steak and potatoes (when available). The man bears some resemblance to the Engalli war-hero-turned-traitor Murta Gorundei, in name, age, and race, though there is little else to corroborate this claim.

A word of advice to visitors: if you like spicy food, ask for your fish "spicy". Going "native" risks more than just your digestive health.

Toma's Fine Huts

This "resort" on Apban Hill, north of the city, is run by a middle-aged Verian man by the name of Toma Issachis. It consists of seven (very) small huts with simple accomodations: a straw bed, a short desk, a rug that doubles as a knee rest when folded, and a window. A bucket is provided for necessaries, with the convenient ridge of Apban hill to facilitate disposal. For these "fine" accomodations, he typically charges anywhere between 1 and 5 silver pearls per two-night stay (minimum two nights), depending on the perceived gullibility of the buyer.

Toma owns a small sloop which he keeps docked about a mile north of the city in a private cove. The boat doubles as his home, and is guarded by two [Lizardfolk#Mon'gorit|skulkers] at all times. Presumably, he has purchased or otherwise acquired the loyalty of the powerful guardians.

The Temple of Varuna

Perched on Akabi Hill, northeast of the city, the temple is fairly impressive for a population of Onaona's size. Constructed in the classical style, it has room enough for the entire village, and then some, to fit comfortably within. This rarely happens, as only about half of the city folk regularly attend services, but its utility as a redoubt has been considered by its ranking priest, Malchor Zariev.

{{main|Malchor}}

Malchor, a 74-year-old Austlander, is widely considered the most important man in the city, and is respected as such. He came to the island in his mid-30's, along with his wife and two sons. His mission was successful, though his family was not; his wife died two years after he arrived, and his eldest son died in a boating accident. His youngest son, Franrich, left Koukora to seek employment elsewhere; he ended up serving in a detachment to a Santasian mercenary company, and perished in a tangle with Imperial forces on the Maruan coast.

The elder priest has successfully bridged the gap between the imperial and islander traditions, and entertains both the colonists' and the natives' views of the god of the sea. Though his superiors in the Mission Council believe this is not an acceptable compromise, it is largely due to his approach that the two peoples of the city are so peacefully integrated.

{{main|Epinora}}

Malchor has only one assistant: Epinora, a young woman of uncertain descent. She appeared in the city 4 years ago, and entered under his care, after some initial trouble fitting in.

Epinora tends to the young, leading a youth group comprised of natives and colonists alike, in their education of universal concepts of the two religions. Her approach is unorthodox, as she frequently leads the children to important sites around the island, as well as chaperones various activities more resembling playground games than traditional catechism. Her eldest student, a 11-year-old native girl by the name of Baku, is an orphan under the church's care, and is being trained for the priesthood.

Though she has occasionally manifested the divine gift of Varuna, Epinora is not an ordained priestess.
