The great Bloodhorn looms over the Sember valley and forms one of the iconic monuments of the Thunder Peaks. The mountain derives its common name from it's high iron content, which causes the mountain's flanks to be tinged the color of rust. The effect is most visible at sunrise and sunset. The great peak is visible from Wyvern's Gate at the saddle of the Thunder Pass in eastern Cormyr, from the highest slopes of the Wyvern Crag in northern Archendale, and from the East Way in Hallow Creek in Deepingdale.
The mountain has had long significance with the native people of the area. To the dwarves of forgotten Thunderholme, the peak was Xundermorn. Bearing no real literal translation, the name implies a mountain of sacred, deep, and slightly sinister significance. As such, it was taken as a sign from Dumathoin to cease their southward expansion and marked the southern border of their dominion. Though the mountain is obviously rich in iron ore, no known mining operation has ever touched its rock face.
In the late 9th century the mountain became host to the lair of Dranaxtratoth, the "Dusk Beast", a fierce young shadow dragon that terrorized the scattered communities of elves and humans that made their home in the Sember valley at the foot of the mountains. The dragon was finally slain in the Year of Unfettered Secrets (880 DR) by a Cormyrian paladin of Sune named Idrian Hawklin and his lover, the elvish sorceress Selsharra. The slaying of the Dusk Beast came to be the seminal event in the founding of Sessrendale.
