House Varlyr

From the Auld Ascadian "va ir lyra", meaning "plays the lute", an appelation of endearment from John Calabeth to Marden of Tront, soon to be High Lord Marden Varlyr. Marden was the first High Lord of the Burinlands, or the Hundred-Keeps as they are known in the common tongue. By the end of the first century GC, the Varlyrs were a well-respected noble house.

Only in modern times have they become synonymous with Brinn. The Burinlands were far smaller than the modern realm, and separated from Galland, the ancient heartlands of modern Brinn, by the Huntsman's Wood, a massive and wild forest. But in the 9th century GC, the conquerer-king Andal Varlyr extend his claims, ultimately taking Cardien and all of Galland for himself.

The Varlyrs have ruled since, until Geldre du Lythe made his power play, siezing the throne of his sister Ellienne's husband when he passed away.

King of Brinn

The Usurper, the Bastard King, Kinslayer, Kingslayer, the Puppet, Lothan the Loathed

1142 (57)

Bastard son of King Taranis du Varlyr and Lartessa d'Laurent. Raised in Cardien, almost as a trueborn son, Lothan was his little brother's inseperable friend. Later, he fell in love with Éliane du Lythe and dueled his brother Riven for her hand. He lost, and was scarred. He retreated to Dacia under the care of his mother, who bred his anger and guided him to his ultimate treason. He raised an army (with much help from his cousin Marten d'Laurent) and launched a civil war, which would claim the lives of his brother, father, and even his lady love, though not her son Tristan du Varlyr. Afterward, he claimed the throne by right of paternal lineage.

Tristan du Varlyr

1176 (23)

Spirited away from the civil war to the hold of his aunt Amandine Aslaney in Valte, he fostered with his cousins Osman and Ayse. When the Ahrimids invaded, he fled, posing as a blacksmith's apprentice. He found a home in Saillonne for a time, before returning to Valte to aid his cousin Ayse Aslaney in the reconquest of her lands. He was promised to her, but instead he wed one Carlotta Valentinia of Avila, who, although wealthy and shrewd, is no noblewoman.
