Costs
These formulas are used to determine the base market value of any magic item.
- Start with 1,000 gp per item level
- Modify by item quality (see below)
- Add other modifiers, if necessary
Item Quality
Quality | Example | Multiplier |
---|---|---|
Artifact |
Weapon of legacy, Flask of Immortality |
10x1 |
Exceptional |
Cloak of Etherealness, Broom of Flying (5e) |
4x |
Major |
Sword +1, Armor +1, Bag of Holding |
2x |
Minor |
Cloak of Elvenkind, Boots of Striding/Springing |
1x |
Other Modifiers
Modifier Type | Description | Example | Multiplier |
---|---|---|---|
Enhancement |
Not an item by itself; modifies another item |
Sword mod (flaming), Armor mod (+5 DR) |
Half base cost |
Consumable |
Usable only once |
Potion, bomb, scroll |
10%1 |
Powered |
Requires user to provide Mana or other resource |
Staves, wands |
50% |
Skilled |
Requires specific skill or tool proficiency, or specific class |
|
75%2 |
Notes:
- 1- if an item is consumable with multiple uses (e.g. Necklace of Fireballs), multiply the 10% by the number of uses. At 10+ uses, it is more efficient to make it non-consumable.
- 2- the discount applies to market value, but not to item creation. If you are crafting an item for yourself, you could simply always require your particular proficiencies and gain -25% to all costs forever.
