Aspirations (Work in Progress
Rules
- Pick X traits (3-5 ish?)
- Each trait has a list of aspirations.
- At any given time, you have one aspiration of each trait "active", chosen randomly.
- If you complete the aspiration, you gain the listed reward, and can choose a new (random) aspiration from that trait to become active in its place.
Reward Levels
Aspirations have different levels of difficulty and corresponding reward:
- Minor: trivially accomplished, minimal rewards.
- Major: difficult to accomplish, significant rewards.
- Epic: nigh-impossible in a short time frame, massive rewards.
- Secret: similar to major aspirations, but only the DM knows which of these is active.
Epic aspirations are not part of the random pool, nor do they have to be "active" to be achieved. All epic aspirations are considered "active" until they have been achieved, at which point they are inactive (even if you qualify for the same aspiration later on).
Traits
Healer
Your enemy is disease and death, and you will fight to the bitter end.
- Minor Aspirations
- Stabilize a subject; includes treating the "dying" state, suspending a disease or magical affliction, or ameliorating the debilitating effects of an injury.
- Inoculate subject against harm; includes effects that provide resistance or shielding against a type of harm they are likely to come into contact with during its duration.
- Ease the pain of a suffering person.
- Major Aspirations
- Convince someone to permanently change their health habits for the better.
- Heal a long-term affliction or injury.
- Epic Aspirations
- Discover and characterize a previously-unknown affliction.
- Find a cure (or superior treatment) for an affliction, one which is not already known to those of your field.
Anti-hero
You couldn't care less about the struggle of good against evil. You're just looking out for number one, and if anyone mistakes you for a hero, that's their mistake.
- Minor Aspirations
- Show disdain for a hero's idealism or conviction.
- Choose retreat or trickery when faced with an opportunity to confront evil in an unideal scenario.
- Use dishonorable tactics to fell an opponent.
- Major Aspirations
- Demand and receive a valuable reward for completing a task; the reward must not have been promised or agreed upon, and is over and above any offered out of a sense of gratitude.
- Betray an ally or innocent in order to secure your own safety or reward. (Note: best not done to PCs).
- Secret Aspirations
- Learn the value of heroism from another's example of sacrifice or resolve.
