Hardness
Hardness is an attribute describing the resistance of a subject (usually an object) to damage.
Any attack inflicting less than subject's Hardness rating inflicts no damage. However, attacks equaling or exceeding the Hardness rating inflict damage as normal.
Unlike Damage Reduction, Hardness does not subtract from damage dealt; the attack inflicts all or no damage, depending on if it meets or exceeds the Hardness threshold.
Example:
- An iron golem has Hardness 50.
- Bill the Barbarian hits him with a greataxe for 45 damage. The attack inflicts no damage.
- Randy the Ranger fires three shots from his bow for 30, 35, and 38 damage. None of the shots inflict any damage.
- Sandra the Sorceress hits the golem with a telekinetic blast for 52 damage. The golem suffers 52 damage.
Notes:
- Armor Penetration applies to Hardness. An attack with 25 Armor Penetration against a target with 50 Hardness need only inflict 25 or more damage to damage the target normally.
